The crypto world is known as one of the most generous communities, especially when it comes to donations. Ripple has pledged to donate millions to universities around the globe in a bid to help further blockchain technology research, and Chris Larsen – Ripple Co-Founder – just pledged a cool $25 million in XRP to San Francisco State University. The $25 million donation is one of the biggest ever made to a university and it has catapulted Ripple into the history books.
Developing the Next Generation
The donation was made to the university’s blockchain lab, which will allow it to purchase the latest equipment, create better blockchain related courses, and fund ambitious projects that will become the future of the blockchain industry. Universities from all around the globe are dabbling in blockchain courses, and the University of Malta is even offering a blockchain scholarship fund. Educating the next generation and helping projects get off the ground is vital, and is a key part of Ripple’s goals.
Crypto Donations Are on the Rise
Much like the market itself, donations in the crypto world are on the rise. In December 2018, Tron and Binance teamed up to donate $200,000 to the Malta Community Chest Fund in a bid to help struggling families put food on the table and gain access to vital medicines and medical treatment, which they would otherwise be unable to afford. Elsewhere in the world, the Bitcoin Reddit community all chipped in to help buy stationary and vital school supplies for children in Venezuela. Enough Bitcoin was raised to buy supplies for over 500 kids, helping them to get the best education possible at a time when the rest of the world has turned its back.
Not a New Trend
In early 2018, a mysterious donor got in touch with medical researcher Linda Tannenbaum. The donor – known only as Pine – originally offered to donate $1 million to the organization, which he quickly increased to a cool $4 million. While it’s still a far cry from the $25 million donation Ripple is making, philanthropy is clearly rife in the crypto world.
Ripple is set to send the XRP to San Fran State Uni in the coming weeks, giving it ample time to plan how it will spend the huge gift. We could see a number of ambitious projects sprouting from San Fran State in the coming years, and it’s these very projects that will change the blockchain world. The Lightning Network was a concept created in a university dorm room, what will San Fran State students have in store for us? The potential is unlimited.
