Indian officials are no fan of cryptocurrencies, and a hack over the weekend that saw the Twitter feed of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, taken over and replaced with a Bitcoin scam for the second time will have only worsened their sentiment. Modi was targeted over the weekend by hackers who tweeted that India was making bitcoin a legal currency in the country and that its citizens were all in line for a bitcoin airdrop, which would have been an unlikely turn of events given how India is taking steps to ban all cryptocurrencies.

Modi Account Promotes National Giveaway

Modi’s Twitter account was hijacked on Sunday, with the hackers tweeting that as well as India accepting bitcoin as legal tender in the same manner as El Salvador, the Indian government had officially bought 500 and was “distributing them to all residents of the country”.

The tweet was quickly deleted and had no impact on the Bitcoin price, with Modi’s office admitting that the account had been very briefly compromised. This will have been an embarrassment for Modi as this is the second time in 14 months that his Twitter account has been illegally accessed; last September someone gained access to his account and sent a series of tweets asking his 70 million followers to donate cryptocurrency to a COVID relief fund.

Just last month Modi warned that cryptocurrency could “spoil our youth” as the country prepares to outlaw the use of digital assets.
