Azuki has admitted that there were issues with its latest NFT collection dubbed Azuki Elementals. The NFT community had lamented that some of the artworks in the new collection were identical to those in the previous collection save for a few cosmetic differences. Azuki has however noted that the mixup wasn’t intentional, adding that they were looking to create consistent characters.
Community Didn’t Understand the Founding Pillars
In a Twitter thread, Azuki said they intended to make “4 variations” of all clothing worn by artworks in the collection to bring harmony to the “Garden,” a virtual setting featuring the four elements of nature, earth, fire, lightning and water.
Azuki,
It’s always both challenging & exciting opening up the gate to the Garden.
This time, we missed the mark.
We hear you – the mint process was hectic, the PFPs feel similar and, even worse, dilutive to Azuki.

Azuki noted that the founding pillars of the new collection weren’t fully understood by the community leading to confusion between the original and new collection, adding that the Azuki project revolves around the original collection.
To the team, we always tried to operate with the understanding that the original Azuki collection would be at the center of our universe. However, we realize that this was not clearly communicated to the community.

It Broke the Trust but We’re Motivated
According to the project, the Elementals’ mint lacked “communication and execution,” something that diluted the community’s trust in the project. Azuki however revealed that the mishap “motivated [them] to make things right.”
Azuki’s vision is to build a decentralized brand. Doing so requires great communication and execution, both of which were lacking with the Elementals sale. We know that we lost a piece of trust today, but nothing gets us more motivated to make things right.

The new collection features 20,000 collectibles with all of them going to previous Azuki and Beanz NFT holders. The mint, held on June 27, sold out in around 15 minutes raking in $38 million with everything scooped up during the presale stage.
With the Azuki team acknowledging that the Elementals artworks were somehow dilutive to the original Azuki collection, it’s unclear how the team will rectify the identical collectibles.
