  • Art Blocks has put most of its NFTs directly on Ethereum to enhance their access
  • The web3 project said the move is part of its mission to preserve collectibles directly on the blockchain
  • The on-chain preservation eliminates the need for third-party tools to view or access the collectibles

Generative NFT project Art Blocks has placed 90% of its collectibles directly on the Ethereum blockchain for “true on-chain preservation.” Art Blocks said the achievement is a culmination of a 4-year mission meant to put every artwork on the blockchain and ”not in cloud storage” or on servers. The NFT project noted that putting the artworks directly on Ethereum eliminates the reliance on third-party tools to access them, meaning that they’ll still be available and accessible even if Art Blocks doesn’t exist.

Core Dependencies Also Migrated

Art Blocks revealed the development during its fourth anniversary. Apart from migrating NFTs, the project also migrated “every element needed to generate these artworks, including core dependencies” like the programming languages used to create the collectibles and artists’ scripts.

The project said that the move makes the NFTs permanent and allows institutions to run their own systems, host independent interfaces, and also ensures that the collectibles “can be studied and experienced for generations to come.”

The move comes two years after the project announced a dance-based NFT collection known as Human Unreadable, which consisted of 400 Ethereum-based collectibles. It also comes two years after the project partnered with NFT gallery Bright Moments to link collectibles with real-world objects.

Most NFTs Are Off-Chain?

Last year, Elon Musk said that most NFTs are just ordinary JPEGs and collectors risk losing them if their creators shut down the project. Musk asked NFT creators to put the NFTs directly on the blockchain to ensure they’re accessible even when their developers are out of business.

With Art Blocks putting its NFTs on the blockchain, it’s to be seen whether other NFT projects will follow suit to reduce reliance on centralized systems.
