- Solana has named its second-generation crypto phone “Solana Seeker”
- The phone has received 140,000 preorders despite few details being available
- The first Solana Saga phone became popular, partly due to valuable airdrops
Solana has announced the name of the second iteration of its crypto cell phone: Solana Seeker. Few other details have emerged over the named the new model, although Solana says this hasn’t stopped it from accruing 140,000 preorders. The Solana Saga series became popular last year the airdrops that accompanied it made it more valuable than the phone itself, and it may be that buyers are hoping for a repeat rather than a new phone.
Solana Goes Again
Solana ventured into the mobile industry in 2022 with the announcement of the Solana Saga. This initiative was part of a broader push to expand the reach of blockchain technology beyond computers, making it accessible to mobile users and encouraging the development of decentralized applications (dApps) in the mobile space.
The Solana Saga was developed by Solana Labs, featuring a unique integration of Solana’s blockchain into the mobile operating system. It was designed to cater specifically to Web3 enthusiasts, offering native support for cryptocurrency wallets, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and NFT (non-fungible token) management. One of the phone’s highlights was the integration of the Solana Mobile Stack (SMS), a suite of tools that enable developers to build decentralized apps optimized for mobile platforms.
However, slow sales suggested that the phone was more shit than hit, but the BONK airdrop that came free with the phone soon became more valuable than the phone itself, leading to sales rocketing.
140,000 Orders
In January, Solana announced that it was planning a second phone, codenamed “Chapter 2”, and the following month it was confirmed, as preorders crossed 100,000. A website has been set up for the Solana Seeker but few technical details have been released, with a sneak preview offered on X:
