- Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has praised artificial intelligence over Web 3.0 and the metaverse
- Gates thinks AI is more revolutionary compared to Web 3.0
- Gates is particularly enthusiastic about AI technologies focusing on content creation
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has expressed a deeper liking for artificial intelligence (AI), saying it has more disruptive power compared to Web 3.0 and the metaverse. For Gates, AI technology focusing on content creation is something to watch closely due to its “huge impact,” adding that the popular ChatGPT chatbot only “gives a glimpse” into the future. Gates’ comments resemble similar comments made by Microsoft gaming head Phil Spencer in October expressing dissatisfaction with the metaverse.
ChatGPT is Just the Beginning
Speaking during an AMA session on Reddit, the Microsoft executive noted that while AI has more revolutionary muscles, Web 3.0 and the metaverse are also great forces but are yet to match AI’s power. According to Gates, content-creating AI technologies are likely to wield the highest impact in the AI world.
When asked about his views on the popular ChapGPT chatbot, he said that it is only a glimpse of what is to come in a future where AI can generate content like a human. On how AI will take over the world, Gates said that his foundation, Gates Foundation, is working to “help kids learn math and stay interested.”
Microsoft investing in ChatGPT’s Creator
Reports suggest that Microsoft is contemplating investing approximately $10 billion in ChatGPT’s creator OpenAI. Other topics that saturated the AMA session include why Gates is purchasing huge chunks of land, his view on taxes and what he would have done differently if he was still the CEO of Microsoft.
Gates’ comments come a year after Microsoft announced a metaverse platform known as Mesh for use with its remote working platform Teams, an indication that conventional firms are positioning themselves for what the metaverse would become in the future.
