- South Korea is collaborating with a local university to train metaverse experts

South Korea is advancing its investment into the metaverse by expressing a need to train experts in the field. The country has selected Chung-Ang University (CAU) as part of its “Metaverse Graduate School Support Project” meant to empower it to “train global experts in the metaverse field.” CAU will receive roughly $4 million in a span of six years to conduct the training which will also act as a springboard for the university to lead the development of metaverse-focused technology and content, a move that puts South Korea on the same path as China which is also heavily exploring the web3 world.
A Metaverse Job Fair
According to Business Korea, the funding will be done by the country’s Ministry of Science and ICT and is meant to spur research and cooperation “to improve the competitiveness of the metaverse industry.”
Baek Joon-ki, a CAU professor, commented on the development saying that the university had already started exploring the virtual world before the cooperation with the government.
Some of its previous efforts in the field include conducting “a metaverse job fair.” Joon-ki acknowledged that the metaverse provides “the next-generation video content environment.”
The government funding will see the university create a new department offering different metaverse-specific courses focusing on things like web3 gaming, character creation and medical services.
Metaverse-based Course Lectures
CAU’s cooperation with the South Korean government comes roughly a month after another South Korean university, Yonsei University, partnered with tech heavyweight LG to create a metaverse campus to offer regular course lectures in the metaverse.
It also comes barely a week after the country unveiled new regulations that classify some NFTs as cryptocurrencies. Other Asian countries like Japan and Singapore are also registering an uptick in metaverse and web3 exploration.
With South Korea advancing its metaverse push by cooperating with learning institutions, it’s to be seen whether other countries will follow the same path or will leave metaverse development to private entities.
