Suspicion over Early MakerDAO Developer Death

Reading Time: 2 minutes
  • The death of early MakerDAO developer Nikolai Mushegian is being treated as suspicious by some
  • Mushegian had been tweeting about a pedophile ring in Puerto Rico before his death
  • The location in which his body is found is notable for its dangerously strong currents

Suspicions have been raised over the circumstances of the death of Nikolai Mushegian, an early developer on the MakerDAO platform who was found in the waters off Condado Beach, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Mushegian was the original technical partner of MakerDAO founder Rune Christensen, working on the project between 2015 and 2018, but it is the last tweet, sent the day his body was discovered, that has raised suggestions of foul play.

Mushegian Had Been Tweeting About Pedophile Ring

Mushegian was working on a crypto project called Rico, a free-floating decentralized stablecoin system that purported to be the “spiritual successor” of MakerDAO’s DAI stablecoin, when he tweeted about an alleged pedohile ring operating out of the region:

Later that day, a local news outlet reported that the body of a 29-year-old man had been retrieved from waters close to Condado Beach and identified as Nicolai Arcadie Muchgian.

Conspiracy Theorists Jump on Suspicious Tweets

Conspiracy theorists immediately jumped on the nature of the death so soon after the tweet, finding other tweets of a similar nature, including on that suggested that he might be “suicided” by the CIA because of information he had:

However appealing those theories might be to some, it might just point to a mentally unstable individual who underestimated the dangers of the waters in that region, which are frequently used by swimmers and surfers and in which eight people are reported to have died since 2021.
