Popular comic turned animation The Smurfs has launched an NFT collection known as The Smurfs’ Society Legendary Collection. According to its creators, the collection is supported by a “collective of Web 3.0 builders” and is among the cartoon’s first steps into the blockchain world. Although The Smurfs’ Society Legendary Collection has a total of 12,500 collectibles with different traits and rarity ratings, the collection features 250 distinct Smurfs.

Bucket Auction Open for 48 Hours

Speaking to Coindesk, The Smurfs’ Society co-founder Arthur Salkin said the decision to crossover to the decentralized space was informed by the cartoon’s 94% popularity in the Web 2.0 world. The collection goes live today April 18 with 3,000 artworks out of the 12,500 up for grabs in what it calls “the bucket auction” that will be open for 48 hours.

Salkin disclosed that the Smurf characters were created by a group of artists specializing in 3D creations. According to the collection’s creators, The Smurfs’ Society Legendary Collection will feature 250 different Smurfs with over 300 unique traits and different rarity levels.

Preliminary rarity levels shared on the project’s websites indicate that the highest rarity level is 36.5% and is associated with Smurf NFTs under the “Outstanding” category. Other categories include Worker (22.5%), Athlete (17%), and Artist (8.5%).

Private Sales and Exclusive Access

The NFT collection is part of the blue creatures’ journey into Web 3.0 that started in November 2022. According to the website, Smurfs give holders access to private sales, members-only games and other benefits “unique to that particular Smurf.”

With The Smurfs joining Fraggle Rock and other cartoons in the Web 3.0 space, it’s yet to be seen whether other popular children’s TV shows like Spongebob SquarePants will make a similar move.
