- Manchester City and OKX announced a sponsorship deal over the weekend
- OKX supporters welcomed the news but Manchester City supporters were distinctly unimpressed
- The response from both sides was a snapshot of how divided the world still is over crypto
When OKX announced a sponsorship deal with cryptocurrency exchange OKX last Friday, the starkly different social media reactions highlighted the huge chasm that still exists between the crypto world and the ‘real’ world. While OKX supporters responded positively about the partnership, Manchester City’s Twitter followers reacted with disgust and outright anger at the news, illustrating at a trice just how much of a divide exists between crypto natives and those whose experience of the space comes almost exclusively from mainstream media outlets.

Manchester City and OKX sent out the exact same tweet to their followers, but the responses could not have been starker. On the OKX side, about 90% of the responses were spam for a shitcoin called MoonDAO, but those who did comment on the news, both on the day and in the days after it, were exclusively positive:
NICE ! COOL ! SO COOL ! 👆👆👆

The sentiment could not have been more different over on the Manchester City Twitter account, where the news was greeted with frank disgust on a range of topics:
Abysmal

I do wish the club would stop with these dodgy “partnerships”. https://t.co/mhBrfvdXlu

The antipathy towards the crypto space is evident from these tweets, with some erroneously calling cryptocurrency illegal while others claimed that Manchester City were now “owned in part by the Chinese government”.
This contrast in opinions highlights the regard in which the crypto space is held by those with no experience of it, and shows, to borrow an awful phrase, how early we are. Much of the blame (and the factual inaccuracy) can be laid at the feet of mainstream media outlets who prioritize concerns over the environment and headline-grabbing scams over the benefits and utility of the crypto movement.
