  • Dubbed Coachella Quests, its players will unlock perks during this year’s festival
  • Some of the perks include access to unreleased music and guest passes to future events

The annual music and arts festival, Coachella, is deepening its entanglement with blockchain technology with the launch of a web3 game. Known as Coachella Quests, the game is built in conjunction with Avalanche blockchain’s developers Ava Labs. The game’s players will receive points that can later be used to receive privileges like accessing VIP lounges and exclusive music, benefits that were previously directly powered by NFTs.

Two Free Passes in 2025

The music festival intends to use the game to have a deeper insight into the gamers’ favorite activities during the event. According to the festival’s innovation head Sam Schoonover, the game links to different experiences and locations in Indio California.

Coachella Quests’ top gamer will be eligible to receive a rare NFT dubbed Coachella Key which will give them access to two free passes during next year’s event.

According to Schoonover, partnering with Ava Labs allows them to accelerate their “goal of experimenting with new loyalty use cases,” adding that the Avalanche blockchain beats its competitors by being cost-effective.

Ava Labs’ Paul Chodirker noted that the partnership presents a new way to interface live events with blockchain assets. Chodirker said that it helps marry the digital with the physical, adding that it also helps learn how blockchain-based assets can bring together artists, fans and festivals.

NFTs Locked in FTX

Coachella Quests isn’t Coachella Music Festival’s first stab at the web3 world. The festival has in the past released NFT collections, some of which were locked up in the fallen FTX exchange. It also has another NFT collection dubbed VIP Pass + Oasis Lounge Keepsake that’s available on OpenSea.

With Coachella testing the web3 gaming waters, it’s to be seen whether the experience will be better than directly offering collectibles.
