  • The new Premier League soccer season kicked off this weekend with cryptocurrency more conspicuous than ever
  • Three teams were sponsored by cryptocurrency-related companies
  • Dogecoin is among the iconic images football fans will see this season

A new Premier League soccer season is upon us, and cryptocurrency is more prevalent than ever. Cryptocurrency companies have taken a shine to the marketing potential of the world’s most watched soccer league, with three teams now sporting crypto-related sponsors on their shirts. However, not all got off to winning starts, as only two of the three recorded opening weekend wins.

Dogecoin Replaces Bitcoin on Watford Sleeves

Watford gave a debut to a very special new signing on Saturday as they recorded an opening weekend win at home to Aston Villa, with the Dogecoin logo emblazoned on their shirt sleeves. The presence on Watford’s shirts of the Shiba Inu, given worldwide attention this year by Elon Musk, is due to a deal with crypto casino and sports betting platform Stake.com which is worth almost $1 million to the club.

Dogecoin takes over from the Bitcoin logo which last year adorned the Watford sleeve, courtesy of last season’s partnership with Sportsbet.io, which is owned by cryptocurrency gaming company Coingaming Group. This keeps a new tradition of cryptocurrency sponsorship going for the club.

Sportsbet.io may have been released by Watford but they didn’t disappear from the Premier League altogether, signing instead for fellow Premier League team Southampton at the end of last season. Unfortunately the Saints went down 3-1 to Everton on the opening weekend, possibly because they didn’t have a cryptocurrency logo on their sleeve.

CoinJar Becomes Newest Cryptocurrency Premier League Sponsor

Better news was heard at Premier League newcomers Brentford, who celebrated their first ever appearance in the Premier League with a 2-0 win at home to footballing giants Arsenal. Also celebrating were the club’s new shirt sponsors, Australian cryptocurrency exchange CoinJar, whose name was beamed to millions of homes around the world on Friday night. The sponsorship of a Premier League team expands Coinjar’s exposure to sports teams, with Aussie Rules football club the Melbourne Demons also sponsored by the exchange.

Cryptocurrency sponsorship of English soccer teams has grown in the last two seasons and is now being joined by the introduction of fan tokens, with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton, Leeds, and Manchester City all launching their own tokens this year.
