BitPay Signs Deal with Xpring, Adds XRP Support

Reading Time: 2 minutes

BitPay has thrilled the Ripple community by signing a deal with Xpring, Ripple’s blockchain development tool that allows easy integration of money into apps, which paves the way for the payment processor to support the XRP token. This means that merchants around the world will be able to accept XRP as payment through BitPay, ensuring that the blockchain payment giant now facilitates payments in four of the top five biggest cryptocurrencies.

BitPay Deal a Win for Xpring

In announcing the deal, Sean Rolland, Director of Product at BitPay, talked up XRP’s credentials as an option for customers:

BitPay customers are leveraging the promise of blockchain payment technology and with XRP can offer a payment option that is fast, cost-effective and scalable. The addition of XRP as the next blockchain asset supported by BitPay expands blockchain choices across the payments space.

Ripple’s notoriously bullish community, nicknamed the XRP army, were naturally thrilled with the move, which represents a win for the Xpring product that was announced in 2018:

Xpring boasts a suite of tools and services that allows easier integration of both fiat and crypto payments into apps, massively reducing the workload required to do so. The package is open source, allowing developers to download the code and run it themselves, although a plug-in service exists for those who are happy to use the XRP ledger.

Token Price Unaffected by Announcement

The announcement had little impact on the price of the XRP token, which has predominantly been in a downtrend since June that has seen it drop 50% in value. However, with the Swell conference just over a month away, predictions abound that the usual pre-Swell pump will occur in anticipation of announcements. However, the BitPay announcement coming so much in advance might represent a slight change of tack as the company drip feeds good news in the lead up to the event.
