An ICO (Initial Coin Offerings) is an online event where blockchain startups attempt to raise funds by selling a percentage of their token supply. The ICO is usually performed at the very start of the project on the back of a whitepaper, with token prices set low to reflect the inherent risk for investors. Early investors are usually rewarded with a bonus of free tokens as a sweetener in order to encourage them to buy, seeing as ICO investment is one of the highest risk/reward plays in cryptocurrency. ICO tokens are held in investors’ wallets until the projects gets listed on an exchange when they can be sold, or held for later gains.
