A Spanish court has officially ruled that John McAfee died by suicide, bringing closure to the investigation surrounding the death of the renowned software entrepreneur. McAfee, famous for launching the world’s first commercial anti-virus software in 1987 and later a cryptocurrency grifter, was discovered lifeless in his prison cell on June 23, 2021, at the age of 75. This tragic event occurred only a few hours after Spain’s high court had authorized his extradition to the United States to face tax evasion charges, with his family claiming that he was silenced.

McAfee Hid $23 Million in Income

US federal prosecutors had indicted McAfee in October 2020 on charges of tax evasion and failure to file returns, with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accusing him of not disclosing $23.1 million in income derived from inaccurate and misleading cryptocurrency recommendations (McAfee’s famous ‘coin of the week’).

Following his arrest and a delay to his extradition hearing, confirmation of his extradition was finally granted by the Spanish High Court in June 2021, but the idea of potentially seeing out his days in a US jail clearly didn’t appeal to McAfee, who took his life less than six hours after the extradition approval.

Family Questioned Official Version

An autopsy had previously determined his cause of death as suicide, but his family filed an appeal requesting a more comprehensive investigation, citing McAfee’s beliefs that the government would silence him because of what he knew.

Despite lingering doubts, the court’s official ruling now confirms the suicide verdict, bringing an end to this tragic chapter, although this almost certainly won’t be enough for his family or conspiracy theorists.
