- The current number of scaling layers isn’t enough to power the envisioned web3 world according to Polygon co-founder Brendan Farmer
- Farmer also believes that easing movement between layer 2s will help solve the fragmentation problem
- The executive holds that Polygon is on track to solve the fragmentation problem through its new feature dubbed Type 1 prover
Polygon co-founder Brendan Farmer has noted that the arrival of a scalable web3 ecosystem hinges on having multiple blockchains’ scaling layers whose current number isn’t enough. According to Farmer, more layer 2s will help achieve a web3 world that has the same scalability as the Internet. Although he admits that the current layer 2 landscape is fragmented, he said that Polygon is working to eliminate the disconnection, a revelation that explains the firm’s launch of new products and features like Polygon 2.0, AggLayer, and Type 1 prover.
Layer 2s Help Drive Web3 Adoption
Speaking on Cointelegraph’s Hashing It Out podcast, Farmer explained that Type 1 prover is meant to enable interaction between any Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-based protocol through a layer 2 environment.
For the role of scaling layers in the advancement of web3, the Polygon executive said that having more layer 2s will help drive adoption for the virtual world. According to the executive, the adoption of web3 is hinged on offering “a really good user experience” that includes a smooth movement of value across layer 1s and 2s.
Giving an example of Solana and Ethereum, Farmer said that Solana beats Ethereum because “it offers a single environment,” unlike Ethereum which has lots of unlinked scaling solutions.
Creating an Efficient Surgical Team
Farmer also touched on other topics like how web3 technologies have infiltrated the messaging, banking and payments industries.
The executive’s views come two weeks after Polygon’s developer Polygon Labs slashed its workforce by 19% to “create an efficient surgical team.”
It also comes two months after another Polygon executive, Jordi Baylina, revealed that the platform is on track to complete its transition to Polygon 2.0 in 2024.
With Farmer’s views, it’s to be seen whether Ethereum layer 2s will work together to reduce fragmentation.
