A 24-year-old Florida man faces more than a decade behind bars after orchestrating an international conspiracy involving violent home invasions, kidnappings, and cryptocurrency thefts targeting US citizens. Remy St Felix was yesterday convicted of nine counts relating to a series of home invasions where he and his gang would physically assault victims before forcing them to send their cryptocurrency holdings to him. St Felix was arrested last year on the way to another planned invasion in New York and will face at least seven years in jail.

Wave of Crime

Court documents and trial evidence revealed that St Felix, hailing from West Palm Beach, was at the helm of a criminal crew that executed a string of violent robberies aimed at cryptocurrency owners. These criminal activities spanned multiple states, including North Carolina, Florida, Texas, and New York, between September 2022 and July 2023. The gang’s modus operandi involved breaking into victims’ homes, violently kidnapping and assaulting them, and coercing them to transfer their cryptocurrency holdings.

St Felix and his accomplices employed sophisticated methods to evade law enforcement, including encrypted communications and anonymous financial transactions. Despite their efforts to remain undetected, dedicated investigators and prosecutors managed to bring them to justice.

One particularly harrowing incident presented at the trial occurred in April 2023. St Felix and an accomplice forcibly entered a victim’s residence, where they assaulted, restrained, and held the victim at gunpoint. The assailants threatened further violence against the victim and their spouse while other members of the crew transferred more than $150,000 in cryptocurrency from the victim’s account.

Gang Laundered Funds Through Privacy Coins

Evidence presented at the trial also demonstrated that the gang engaged in unauthorized access to email accounts and conducted physical surveillance of their targets before the home invasions. They laundered the stolen funds using privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Monero and leveraged decentralized finance platforms that lacked stringent customer verification protocols. The conspirators communicated through encrypted messaging apps to coordinate their criminal activities and money laundering schemes.

St Felix’s downfall came in July 2023 when he was apprehended by the FBI en route to a planned home invasion in New York. The investigation led to the arrest and subsequent guilty pleas of thirteen co-conspirators, including members of the home invasion crew.

The jury found St Felix guilty on nine counts, including conspiracy, kidnapping, Hobbs Act robbery, wire fraud, and brandishing a firearm during a violent crime. Sentencing is scheduled for September 11, where St Felix faces a mandatory minimum of seven years and could receive a life sentence. The final sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge, who will consider the US Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
