A documentary charting the history of Coinbase and its experience of becoming a publicly listed company will air on Friday. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong tweeted the news yesterday, saying that the filmmakers had gained “unprecedented access” to the company for the last three years, and that it would show “the good, bad, and ugly” of building Coinbase. However, there was immediate scepticism over what the documentary would actually show, with some asking if the long-running allegations of insider trading and the plethora of lawsuits against the company would feature.

Armstrong Wants to “Demystify” Crypto

Armstrong posted a tweet thread about the documentary, which has been kept under wraps until now, saying that he wanted to “demystify” crypto and “what it takes to build a tech startup”:

Interestingly, it was Armstrong himself, he says, who contacted the director, ten-time Emmy-winning filmmaker Greg Kohs, about telling the Coinbase story having watched another of Kohs’ films about the computer program AlphaGo, which became the first computer program to defeat a professional human Go player in 2017.

Critics Suggest Not Everything Will Make It In

Armstrong said that the film would chart Coinbase’s history in 2012 right up to its public listing on the Nasdaq in May 2021, an act that precipitated a 50% crash in the crypto market. COIN is currently valued at $74 a share, down from its valuation on listing of $380.

Despite the documentary being posited as a ‘warts and all’ affair, there were those that asked if everything really would come out:

It’s fair to say that while there will be some interested viewers in the crypto space, many will certainly not be tuning in.
